In 1993, the Compostela Holy Year, the University of Santiago de Compostela initiated contacts with other institutions of higher education located on the secular Ways to Santiago. The main aim was to establish a university network that would facilitate co-operation between universities to preserve the historical and cultural heritage that had emerged along these pilgrim routes to Compostela which have crossed Europe since the IX century.
After the first contacts, fifty seven European universities held a meeting in Santiago between the 2nd and 4th of September 1993. A Commission formed of representatives of the universities of Valladolid, Liège, Nantes, Göttingen, Minho, Jaume I and Santiago de Compostela drew up the statutes and regulations of the Compostela Group of Universities. These documents were approved at the Constituent Assembly held at the University of Santiago during the 2nd and 3rd of September 1994.
