Prix Compostelle-Xunta de Galicia
The President of the CGU, Maurits van Rooijen, announced on a press conference held on May 14th 2012, the decision, made jointly with the Galician Government, of giving the XVI International Prize Compostela Group-Xunta de Galicia to the College of Europe as a recognition for its promotion of the European values in Higher Education.
The candidacy was presented by Fundación Galicia Europa.
Along with the president of the Group, the General Secretary of the Xunta de Galicia for Culture and member of the Jury, Anxo Lorenzo, and the Rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and member of the Group's Executive Committee, Juan J. Casares Long, also took part at the press conference.
Institutional profile of the College of Europe
The College of Europe is an independent university institute of postgraduate European studies with the main campus in Bruges, Belgium. It was founded in 1949 by leading European figures and founding fathers of the European Union such as Salvador de Madariaga, Winston Churchill, Paul- Henri Spaak and Alcide De Gasperi in the wake of the Hague Congress of 1948 to promote "a spirit of solidarity and mutual understanding between all the nations of Western Europe and to provide elite training to individuals who will uphold these values" and "to train an elite of young executives for Europe."
The Jury of the XVI International Prize Compostela Group-Xunta de Galicia was chaired by Mr Jesús Vázquez Abad, Regional Minister of the Xunta de Galicia for Culture, Education and University Development, by delegation of the President of the Xunta de Galicia, and is composed by the President of the Compostela Group of Universities, Mr Maurits van Rooijen; the Vice rector for External Relations and Internationalization of the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), Mr Víctor Millet Schröder; the General Secretary of the Xunta de Galicia for Universities, Mr José Alberto Díez de Castro; the Vice president of International Relations of the Universidad Mayor (Chile), Mr René Lara; the General Secretary of the Xunta de Galicia for Culture, Mr Anxo Manuel Lorenzo Suárez, who delegates his vote in the Regional Minister of the Xunta de Galicia for Culture, Education and University Development; a member of the Administrative Council of the University of Nantes (France), Mrs Pilar Martínez- Vasseur.
