Cees Nooteboom is awarded the IV International Prize Compostela-Xunta de Galicia
The jury of the IVth edition of the International Prize Compostela-Xunta de Galicia has awarded the Dutch novel and essay writer Cees Nooteboom with the IV International Prize Compostela-Xunta de Galicia, in recognition for his excelent literary work and his compromise with the idea of European identity, to which he has devoted some essays. On this occasion, the Jury was presided by Manuel Fraga, President of the Xunta de Galicia, and formed by Michael Cooper, President of the Compostela Group of Universities; Jaume Porta, Rector of Lleida University; Josef Mifsud and Piotr Daranowski, as representatives of the rectors of Malta and Lodz, respectively; Xesús Pérez Varela and Celso Currás, Counsellors of Culture and Education of the Xunta de Galicia; and José Eduardo López Pereira, General Director of Universities of the Xunta de Galicia.
Cees Nooteboom is considered one of the most important and original European writers. Among his novels, we can mention Rituals, In the mountains of Holland, and Mokusei!; and among his essays, The Kidnapping of Europe, which is a compilation of conferences on the subject of the identity of European citizens, and also Roads to Santiago, which describes a personal journey to Compostela across the Peninsula.
The awarding ceremony of this IV edition of the Compostela-Xunta de Galicia Prize took place at the 6th. General Assembly of the Group, in Santiago de Compostela, in September 7th 2000.
